EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
In 2017, we invested a lot of time and effort in increasing the appeal of the Museum Park and the continuous programming for the Kunsthal as ‘Palais des Festivals ‘. With the park acting as a podium and meeting place for visitors and cultural partners in the city, we were able to forge and strengthen our long-lasting relations with cultural partners, reach new visitor groups and offer a multidisciplinary (side) programme that is just as versatile and rich in contrast as the exhibition programme.
A selection of our events in 2017:
DIGITAL DAYS
On the occasion of the exhibition ‘HUMAN/DIGITAL: a symbiotic love affair. Digital Art from the Hugo Brown Family Collection’, the Kunsthal presented the DIGITAL DAYS. For five days, between Wednesday 1 and Sunday 5 March, the Kunsthal playfully focused on the relationship between human beings and technology. The programme was made possible in collaboration with V2 Institute for the Unstable Media, SETUP | MediaLab Utrecht, STRP and others. Also part of DIGITAL DAYS was Museumnacht010 (Rotterdam museum night), with a special programme focusing on hyperrealism and reality that went on into the small hours.
Kunsthal X Afrovibes: Designing the Catwalk
In 2017, the Kunsthal also joined forces with Afrovibes again for a day filled with fashion, design, music and dance. Visitors could participate in a workshop led by designer Atang Tshikare and visit the exhibitions ‘Conny Janssen Danst 25’ – with live rehearsals – and ‘Cat Love. Nine Lives in Art’. The day ended with the Lady Africa Fashion Show.
Masterclasses by Peter Lindbergh, Conny Janssen, Erwin Olaf and Rem Koolhaas
In collaboration with the Willem de Kooning Academy, Kunsthal Rotterdam organises a series of masterclasses by extraordinary artists. These masterclasses focus on the students, with the artist engaging them in conversations about their portfolios, future prospects and other pressing issues. Following photographer Peter Lindbergh and artist Jordy van den Nieuwendijk, it was the Dutch photographer and artist Erwin Olaf’s turn for a masterclass on the occasion of the Mapplethorpe exhibition in 2017. During the 25th anniversary celebrations, none other than the architect Rem Koolhaas talked to the critic and editor Véronique Patteeuw in front of an auditorium packed with students. Koolhaas concluded his masterclass with a personal guided tour.
MASH-UP! Kunsthal X IFFR
On Friday 3 November 2017, for the fourth time in a row, Kunsthal Rotterdam joined forces with the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) for MASH-UP! This included a unique preview of the movie The Square by director Ruben Östlund, a visit to the autumn exhibitions and, this year, an especially fabulous party on the occasion of the Kunsthal ‘s 25th anniversary.
Naked Tour
The human body is an important feature in Mapplethorpe‘s work. His ability to depict the shapes of the body in a sculptural way is unparalleled. The Kunsthal organised a Naked Tour during which visitors had a chance to enjoy Robert Mapplethorpe‘s photography without any clothes on; an extraordinary experience!
